Murder is the last thing on OBGYN Dr. Jillian Sanders' mind, but it's the first thing she must consider when her brother's ex fiancee turns up dead.

Up all night delivering babies, Dr. Sanders is summoned to the ER to see a young pregnant woman possibly in premature labor. Within minutes, the back doors of the emergency room burst open and paramedics rush in a late twenties Jane Doe, clinging to life after being run down while jogging.

A side-long glance is all it takes for Dr. Sanders to recognize the victim as her brother's former fiancee and long time family friend. Of course, it could be Kara's twin sister Sara, but based on a recent conversation with Kara-a conversation Dr. Sanders promised to keep secret against her better judgment- the chances of that are slim.

When resuscitation fails and the police write the incident up as an accidental hit-and-run, Dr. Sanders must tell all. And when her old flame, Detective Mike Daniels, the detective assigned to the case, appears to have other priorities, Dr. Sanders decides to investigate Kara's death on her own.

Throughout the novel, Dr. Sanders attempts to keep some semblance of her life prior to Kara's death. She continues to see patients, deliver babies and and perform surgery. She also resolves a relationship with her ex husband and learns to love again, all the while somehow managing to maintain her sense of humor.

But as Dr. Sanders will soon discover, there is nothing funny about Kara's case and there is much to lose by getting involved. Not the least of which...is her life.

On the plus side, this book covers some medical facts that we laymen rarely hear of. My wife is an OB nurse and this is the first doctor story I've read where the doctors/nurses actually had to chart after working with patients. My wife has spent 'hours' catching up on paperwork after she's gotten off work. I actually think they should get overtime for all the extra hours they put in charting.

As for the story, it was just okay. There was a good mystery but I found the heroine way too irritating. She kept nosing around (..in typical 'cozy' mystery fashion, I suppose..) even after the police warned her to stop, and even after she was nearly killed several times. She also kept information from the police that could have helped find the killers faster, and would have actually helped to protect her own life. She never seemed very upset about her near misses, other than feeling bad for the people who she got hurt or killed with her snooping. She didn't even think to tell the policeman who clearly liked her that she was nearly run over and killed in a different town. She just seemed very stupid and irritating to me.

As I said, the mystery was good so if you really like mysteries then you might try this one. As for me, I won't be reading any more about the irritating Dr. Sanders.

Foul Player The Doctor Jillian Sanders Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Sue Parker Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Just finished this story and I really like it. It is a great mystery, and a good medical story at the same time. There are no sex scenes, or violence, so I recommend it highly for mature teens on up.

The story is well written and researched. The story is well detailed without getting boring while doing it. It is concise and easy to read. Once you start, you will not want to put it down until you finish it.

The characters are well written and defined. As the story unfolds, you get to know each and every one of them as if they lived next door and you had known them for a long time. Of course we will all like certain ones. I do like Jill, and I love her Aunt. She is a hoot!

I would like to be able to read more of Dr Jillian Sanders. Especially is the hunky Detective Daniels was in the future stories.
I liked Dr. Jillian Sanders OBGYN. She is presented as a competent and caring doctor half caught up in a murder made to look like an accident. I was less fond of her relationship with Mike, her old school pal and the detective assigned to the case. When it came to Mike, Jillian repeatedly lost all sense of objectivity (something that really does happen when hormones push their way into an intellectual relationship) and made some serious investigative mistakes. Shame on Jillian! However, her relationships with her patients make up for it!
The plot is tight and consistent, and the good guys are good and the bad ones bad. The ending is neatly wrapped up with a bow on top.Perhaps that bow (Johnny and Sara) was a bit much.
I was hooked from the first page of this book, it was the only thing that I focused on for about 3 1/2 hours. I really enjoyed meeting all the characters in this book, especially Dr. Jillian Sanders. Detective Mike, was a little strange and I agreed with Johnny about calling him 'Monk'! That was just one of the many humorous moments in this book. I thought it was at times slough out loud funny and at others thought provoking and then at times very sad, but overall very entertaining and a great read. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a great time reading!!!!
Interesting. Stand-alone start to a series. The storyline has some twists and is not real easy to follow. The writing is a bit choppy.

Believable characters with distinct personalities. Informative dialogue.

'In the back of my mind, I couldn’t stop thinking about a quote I’d read not long ago by a Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University, Dr. Charles Raven

A person does not realize himself at the expense of others.'

No desire to re-read this story or follow the series. Remember this is my personal opinion and does not reflect on the author.
So many times this book almost got great, but then fell short. Just not the detail you might expect in some of the potentially intense sections of the book. For example a guy breaks in and tries to kill her, she slashes his arm with a knife and runs out of her house to get the cops watching over her house. They arrest the attacker. She seems to bounce back to normal instantly like is was nothing more than her cat not using the litter box. People are getting killed or nearly killed multiple times, but there isn't much drama around any of these events. More like some third party just recording the events. The book doesn't capture the fear, anxiety, pain of loss, emotional battles, and danger in a way that draws you in and makes you feel anything close to reality. The story had lots of potential and I did read it to the end, but it just didn't deliver.
Dr Jillian Sanders has a problem--actually a few problems. A good friend is the victim of a hit-and-run. She dreads the reaction of her slightly unstable brother, who loved that friend. And then somebody, presumably the same party who offed her friend, is now trying to kill Jillian as well.

As in all good mysteries, the list of suspects is lengthy. Law enforcement is not as hostile as in some such stories, but it does tend to be "elusive." Which means solving this thing is pretty much up to Jillian.

Her ironic narrative voice interested me. There were moments when it didn't dovetail with my preconception of a physician's self-talk, but I'm no authority on that. I do know people who express themselves as she does, and no one scrambling across a deserted beach at night, with a killer somewhere behind, should be expected to maintain professional detachment.

The pacing is lively and perky (a distinct contrast with the 985-page tome I'd just finished before starting this). The settings and actions are believable. The dialog works. And ultimately the story is satisfying. What else could one ask?
