Claude Bruce ("barrister and man about town") is one of the last people to see Lady Dyke who disappears after boarding a train at Victoria. Bruce investigates the mystery in cooperation with (and sometimes at odds with) Inspector White of Scotland Yard--often the butt of comic relief. Tracy is a good writer and the story is more readable than many other mysteries of the period (1905).

This is the Late Victorian Golden Age of Fainting Women, and the novel contains comments like "Had Bruce been a woman he [would] have fainted." That being said, "A Mysterious Disappearance" is a fairly competent detective story with interesting twists and turns from Monte Carlo to Wyoming and the appearance of engaging characters.

A Mysterious Disappearance Two Classic Mystery Novels edition by Louis Tracy Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This book is a survivor of popular fiction from the turn of the previous century. It takes place in the age when horse drawn conveyances were still being used in the streets of London. The characters in this story are more polite and more formal in their relationships than characters found in today's mystery fiction and they appear to have a better command of the English language than one encounters in our era. Once one allows for these cultural differences one can begin to ease into the plot of this story. The wife of an upper class gentleman has disappeared mysteriously. Naturally, the police are enlisted to find out what happened, but the best detective work done in this case is by a barrister who volunteers to help uncover facts that might solve this disappearance. There are some twists and turns in the plot, but by the story's end the mystery is solved.
Frankly, the number of characters who are ready to sacrifice or kill themselves becomes too much, almost comic. But for the most part the writing carries you along effectively.
Too long a story and too much repetition. Too many red herrings that lead back to the merry-go-round--again.
This book was a good read. Was one of those that was hard to put down. I like the kindle app on the I pad and synched it to the I phone. Needless to say I read it in record time. Think I'll pick out anther Louis Tracy book. I like the author's style of writing.
This gets off to a slow start, with the protagonist coming off as a rather colorless and bland character. But as the pace of the story picks up, so does your interest in both the plot and the main character. I'm a big fan of late 19th-early 20th century mysteries and I was very pleased to find out that there is an author, Louis Tracy, whom I'd never heard of and whose work I enjoyed.
Mr. Tracy is so adept in creating multii-faceted mysteries. This one kept getting more obscure until finally the light began to shine through. A fun read because of the complexity. I enjoyed this one as much as others I have read by the author.
Fun book to read, with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Wealthy, titled, and popular, a London society woman vanishes without a trace, and all trails lead back to a mystery man and a beautiful woman. Family friend Claude Bruce, the last to see her, is haunted by her disappearance, and can't let it go.

Tale reaches from London and environs to Monte Carlo, Italy, even the wild west of America, and includes a haughty Duke, disapproving butler, saucy maid (is she blackmailing the Duke?)

I am thoroughly addicted to Louis Tracy in all his forms...mystery, action, adventure, historical. Do try at least one or two of his novels. He is a forgotten gem of a writer.
